Coal Compared to Other Energy Sources
DependenceCoal is used extensively because it is easily combustible and produces substantial amounts of energy. Though our reliance on coal has declined because of the availability of other fuels such as petroleum, natural gas, nuclear, solar and hydropower, coal still remains a prime source of energy.

Non-Renewable NatureEven though coal availability is plentiful, it is still non-renewable and depleting. It will eventually run out. This is true for other non-renewable resources like petroleum and natural gas as well. In comparison, alternate energy sources such as solar energy and hydropower are inexhaustible and renewable resources which make them more efficient and reliable.

AvailabilityAccording to the U.S. Geological Survey, coal reserves are estimated at 475 billion tons. With present energy demands, this should sustain the U.S for another 200 years. Coal is abundantly available in other parts of world as well. In comparison, petroleum has already reached its peak and the reserves are on a steep decline.

PollutionCombustion of coal adds more carbon dioxide to the atmosphere per unit of heat energy than other fossil fuels. Like other non-renewable energy sources, coal emits greenhouse gases such as methane, nitrous oxide and sulfur dioxide. Renewable energy sources are cleaner and greener alternatives as they have fewer emissions.
